Retinol and Retinoids (Vitamin A Derivatives)

Based on commonly reviewed over-the-counter formulations, retinol products typically range from 0.25% to 1% retinol equivalent. For beginners: start with 0.25%–0.5% and use 2–3 times per week. Prescription retinoids (tretinoin, adapalene) are much stronger and require a dermatologist.

Safety and Irritation

Retinol is not dangerous, but it is irritating. Expect redness, flaking, and sensitivity in the first month this is normal and temporary. The mistake most people make: using it nightly right away. Instead, start low and slow (twice a week), then increase frequency as your skin adapts.

Niacinamide is one of the safest actives. Irritation is rare. A small subset of people report mild flushing or warmth, but this usually resolves within 15 minutes and diminishes with repeated use.

Most peptide serums contain 1%–10% peptide complex. The exact peptide type matters more than concentration; there’s no universal “best” dose. Look for products that list specific peptides rather than vague “peptide complex.”

At lower concentrations (below 5%), efficacy is questionable. Higher concentrations (above 20%) don’t show proportional benefit in available research and increase irritation risk.

Safety and Irritation

L-ascorbic acid can be irritating, especially for sensitive skin. It’s acidic (pH around 3–3.5) and may cause stinging, redness, or dryness. Stable derivatives are gentler.
